Black Hole next door and Cold Space
October 16th 2009 22:21
Earlier this week I came across something about a kind of magnecity a form of magnetic poles that flow like electricity. The folks who spend their days staring at Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism said we might see these things sooner or later.
What I for one did not expect is that someone, other than the Large Hadron Collider folks would claim to have created a black whole up close and personal . My next question was, why aren't we all dead? Turns out it was not that kind of black hole. All the the math and engineering that went into this must surely be a nightmare--someone figured out how to twist up electromagnetic fields as though they had been in the vicinity of a gravitational black hole. So we wind up enlightened rather than on the wrong side of a black whole.
First Ever Black Hole Created on Earth
Meantime, back at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) they are making the thing colder than a witches you know what in preparation for destroying the universe. Well, they are not actually going to destroy the universe, just the earth. And well, they mostly promise they'll not destroy the earth this time. Mostly.
Ok so for the most part the only people who believe that the LHC will create a black hole and suck us all in are the same folks who think the earth will be destroyed in 2012. I sense a contradiction there. If we are destroyed now, what gets destroyed in 2012?
Oh well.
In the mean time, it turns out that Stevie Wonder with his song "Ribbon in the Sky" was prophetic. Scientists have discovered a ribbon at the edge of our solar system
