Do you remember that nearby abandoned field, overgrown with weeds? Suppose we could turn all that garbage into gas for your car? There may be a way but first we have to force virgin fungi to have sex.
It turns out there are fungi that have characteristics that are useful in process of converting cellulose into fuel. Cellulose is, biologically speaking, a virtually indestructible material produced by woody plants. It's plentiful, easy to grow and does not rot so it would be the perfect sort of garbage to turn into fuel. Not only would no one miss it if it went a way, many might be glad you took out the trash.
Different fungi have different characteristics. There are some asexual fungi which could be persuaded to swap genes in our favor if only they would engage in a sexual reproduction. If soft lights and Barry White won't get then in the mood, break out the beakers and lab coats, we will bind them with science.
