Government is a Necessary Evil

August 7th 2011 18:17

There was a news story recently about a child who had found a wounded bird and tried to nurse it back to health. Eventually the bird flew away. Now authorities are trying to levy a $500 fine against the mother and they are even talking about jail time for mom for interfering with an endangered species.

Remember the good old days when we still had silly laws but those who enforced them where not completely incompetent idiots. And while the authorities might give the parent and the child a stern lecture that would make mommy fret and the child cry there would be no talk of jail or even significant fines. The child would be assigned some harmless community service for a weekend or two and serious law enforcement activity would be reserved for poachers and drug smugglers.

I remember another incident in which some bureaucrat with nothing better to do shut down a child’s lemonade stand. And we often hear horrifying tales of governments taking children because a mom swatted the little tyke on the bottom.

Recently, on my regular morning commute, I have begun noticing the police out with radar guns trying to harass some poor guy going to work. After all, commuters are safe easy targets. You certainly wouldn’t want the police taking down violent drug gangs–they might get hurt. And besides, the police department is actually the revenue generation arm of our cash strapped municipalities. Everyone knows it’s easier and safer to get money from honest citizens than from criminals who are idly wondering if they should kill the “pigs”.

When I pay my bills to a government office online there is almost always a “convenience fee.” Let me get this straight, I am saving the government money because they don’t have to have anyone answering my snail mail and they don’t have to try to deposit my check in an account and have it clear and they don’t have to have me come down and waste some clerks time, and I am paying more for that privilege?

In my view, all of these incidents and many more besides are all of piece. They are indicative of the kind of society we have become. Government is no longer here to protect and serve us. Rather government is seeking to protect and serve and enlarge itself. Government looks for any excuse to grab law-abiding citizens by the ankles, dangle them over some appropriately elevated platform and shake vigorously until all the money comes out. If at all possible, the police and the bureaucrats they serve want to make sure that the kids watch the shake down so that the lessons in subservience to government and obedience to absolute law begin early.

In England they are talking about reforming the system so that the government gets their pay checks first and the then the people get whatever the government decides to pass on.

If you really want to know why it is vital to cut government rather than to raise taxes, the creeping socialism that we see taking over every facet of our lives is the reason.

We must let government know It’s our money not theirs and they don’t have any right spend limitless amounts of our money.

What makes government greed worse is public employee unions. Everywhere public employee unions exist they are bankrupting governments with their pension and health plans and their never ending quest for more money and less work.

Government must learn all over again who is servant and who is master. The whole reason Obama and the democrats took over all of health care and the reason why they want to raise taxes no matter what is that they believe government is master and you are a servant.

So are you a government slave? Have you no God but government and is government your God? Do you work for and at the pleasure of the government?
