Inspection begins!

So! The car is home, garaged and we've had a few chances to open the hood and have a look around - everything seems to be in some sort of vague order. The greatest culprit and biggest source of trouble for coming weeks is rust, found particularly between the seals of things such as the headlights and little bits of bare metal here and there. Unfortunately some of the larger pieces of rust we've spotted will require welding in weeks to come.. though there is a small respite in much of the rust simply being surface rust (Much more simple job of sanding back and bogging the spots).
Thought I'd use this opportunity to give people a bit of a peek at the engine -
Not the most beautiful specimen, though it has plenty of potential - Nissan L28 straight six OHC. One of the bigger considerations for the future of this project is whether we should replace this engine (and drivetrain, goodbye automatic transmission!) or restore the engine and attempt to keep the car in a state of old-style glory. We've heard of several people who have done 280ZX and 260Z restorations before replacing the engine with a RB25 engine.. a very tempting idea if we have the cash to splurge on the car in the future.
So far it seems like not much has been done to the engine or other components particularly recently - the oil filter and air filter have both been replaced some time ago but much else in there is likely to be as it was when the car turned up in Australia in 1979.
From here, we'll probably be inspecting the interior a little, taking a few more pictures to put up and start writing down the surface rust we need to remove. Time to track down an orbital sander and brush up on removing rust over the weekend!
