Killing the Kitchen God

January 7th 2009 16:35
We feared a bad report in heaven

and so we butchered the Kitchen God.

We took him down from where he hung on hooks

over the stove, sweating as he did on summer days.

We gutted him like a fish and poured honey on his mouth

we doused his dead lips with his favorite liquor

and stuffed him into fire.

And thus we were assured good luck for the New Year.

The poem above was inspired by the myth of the Kitchen God that is part of the Chinese New Year. Check out the myth: Kitchen God.
