Michael Jackson: Hype or Scam?

July 11th 2009 13:39

I was listening to some liberal radio talk show host who had no personal connection with Michael Jackson. The talk host described himself as "deeply, deeply saddened" by Michael Jackson's passing. I was puzzled by this remark. It got me wondering if the constant drumbeat of Michael Jackson stories are either all hype or a scam.

Consider this: they said there might be millions lining the route to the Michael Jackson memorial. There were hundreds, not millions.

Yes his records are selling better than ever but isn't that just the point? Are we being subjected to the media's equivalent of Jackson's father almost grabbing a microphone and saying: let me tell you about my new record company? In other words, quick, let's hype it up, get our $500 million back and split. For those who don't know, Michael Jackson is reported to have left something on the order of $500 million dollars in debt. That's $500 million reasons for connected people to keep pushing the drug stories and the Michael Jackson had 75 car stories.

At least some of what we have witnessed may be a purely fabricated story. I keep seeing two kinds of people even in the alternative cyber media talking this story up. Those who claim to be appropriately sad and those who say: look at what I have for sale!

There are some cautionary tales to be wrung out of this whole sordid affair.

Not even the rich and famous can afford to live a "borrowed life." A borrowed life is one in which even your emotions are not your own. Instead they come out of pill bottles. They give you a reason to get up in the morning and a way to shut it down so effectively at night that you sleep the dreamless sleep of the dead

The borrowed life style extends to money and it is that part of the life style of the rich and famous that is hardest to understand. Though they have lots of money they still feel the need to borrow more. Then they spend all that borrowed money on luxury items that either depreciate in value or become completely worthless. So when the money stops flowing in, they are almost guaranteed to be broke.

You always wonder why instead of shopping sprees, millionaires don't buy the store. Instead of renting of expensive property, why not buy it and rent it out to others? Last time I checked billionaires like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, who give considerable money to charity, do not make a habit of running into stores and buying lots of expensive junk: that's why they are billionaires.

One of the odder things we learn is the rich and famous don't always have better drugs than us. Sometimes their drugs are simply more addictive and more deadly. Doesn't it seem strange that the first thing some rich and famous people do is to have a lot of surgery so they no longer have to look at themselves in the mirror and take a lot drugs so they don't have to think about what's going on inside.

Mind you, I will still take the travails of rich over the miseries of poverty, but it does seem that you must be grounded and believe in something before you get rich and famous or all your wealth and popularity can not save you.

So the commentator said he was "...saddened...". Ya know what? He's supposed to say something like that! Can you imagine anyone in the media standing up and saying, "So, the guy died. What the hell? Let's get on with our lives!" Can you imagine the stir that would cause? Let's be real--you feel a sense of loss for the families and MAYBE a small portion of your life is removed. I was more affected by the the Three Stooges dying than a lot of other celebrity deaths. Why did the Jackson death eclipse the death of Farrah Fawcett? My DOG died this week and I was more affected by that than the the deaths of Jackson, Fawcett, or Steve McNair and I even blogged about McNair!
