Mugwumps and Quidnuncs
December 25th 2011 21:49
I like the way weird sounding words roll off the tongue. Despite the fact that there maybe little clear meaning to be construed from any odd combinations such as mugwumps and quidnuncs.
Quidnuncs are clearly gossips and those who like gossips.
Historically, mugwumps were people who bolted from the republican party at an important juncture in history. In modern parlance a mugwump might be anyone of real or imagined important. Sometimes terms like bigwigs and high mucky mucks are used. Mugwump could likely be used in a similar way.
And so the press might be called quidnuncs and the pretenders to the throne of republican party candidate for president could be considered mugwumps--especially Ron Paul and Donald Trump who have threatened to run as third party candidates.
