Politics is the Art of Selfishness

June 28th 2009 21:10

Politics is a kind of public auto-eroticism. You think it is about something else? Serving the common good perhaps?

Look at the governor of South Carolina. He was such a selfish, stupid putz in his personal life that his wife and his political party threw him out on his ear. It is clear that the honorable thing to do with his governorship is to resign. It would be a clear indication that even he has a sense of right and wrong and that even he can held to account.

But the governor has refused to resign despite the fact that he has humiliated his nation, his party, his state, his family, his wife and himself. One is forced to conclude that he is either not resigning for purely selfish reasons--he needs the money or the perks of being governor, or he is being a party loyalist. His own party might loose power or position if he resigned right now. Which would mean he is acting out of political expediency and not for the common good.

Think about how often various party hacks who are caught dead to rights with say $90,000 in their freezers do not resign immediately and you will realize that politics is not a representation of our higher selves. In fact on a good day politics is an exercise in self gratification. On an average day its a bunch of hacks acting out of political expediency. On a bad day the public is getting screwed.

Politics as self Gratification.
