All politicians are a cross between a whore and a horse's ass who'd sell themselves for a quarter but when deals are made with terrorists nations for oil, the truth that we are selling our killers the rope that will be used to hang us becomes abundantly clear.
Although even the most optimistic say that our solar future is at least 25 years away--if we work at it--it is nonetheless good to see some good solar energy news.
A group of Australians have apparently broken the 43% conversion efficiency barrier for solar cells:

There are those who believe we could power everything from houses to cars by turning all roads in to solar cells. Since the roads would have to go somewhere, it might take care of some of the transmission grid problems as well.

Finally, estimates have been made on what it would take to power the earth via solar cells. The estimates are that for under $2 trillion and for less than 10% of the land area of the earth, we could have all the energy we need.
