Stop Prison Rape

The nation's prisons have become a finishing school for career criminals, a hot bed of illegal drug use, and ground zero for race riots. Convicts live in constant fear of being cut with make shift knives or being gang raped in the prison shower. America's most violent prisons are in and of themselves, cruel and unusual punishment.
The first response that might occur to an upright and moral people when faced with an obscenely evil penal system is: So what? Surely evil deserves evil. Criminals have worked hard at constructing their fate, let them stew in their own juices.
If we had prison islands to which criminals where shipped and from which there was no return, then letting them kill each other might not be the worse idea ever. Unfortunately we don't. And given that left wingers have taken over the government, the chances of more Guantanamos is slim and none and slim just left town.
We are guaranteed that men hooked on drugs, infected by socially transmitted diseases, and trained in violence and criminality by race gangs will one day be let out on our streets to live among us. The wonder is not that there is violent crime in our society, but rather that there is not more of it.
I don't know about you, but I for one do not care to suffer a home invasion and the attendant violence due to a social experiment gone awry or because someone has to be the statistic.
Out of compassion or self preservation, we need to do something about prison. If you consider that many in prison are recidivists, in other words they have failed at being clever criminals before, it would appear that we could cut the costs of prisons if we could have effective penal reform.
Assuming that you are not a racist, if you suddenly found yourself in prison, what would cause you to join a violent race gang? Anyone who is not a member of a race gang has no protection in prison. Prison is Darwinism run amuck. Everyone in prison will beat you, cut you, steal from you, and rape you to within an inch of your very life. Unless you are in a race gang. Gangs have their own violent internal pecking order, but it is better to take your regular Tuesday beating than taking a beating every damn day.
So the first thing you would need to do to change prison culture is to ensure the physical safety of the prisoners. In other words, stop prison rape. There are several things that might be done to stop prison violence. Probably the most important is to have well trained, non corrupt prison guards. Such guards would be necessary to do things like make certain everything prisoners do, including taking showers is under observation. If necessary, change the design of showers, or perhaps better yet, eliminate showers all together. Maybe prison should be a place where convicts learn how to take a sponge bath. No showers or baths until you get out of prison. Clean up in your cell.
Any one who looks at crime and punishment in the United States is struck by the correlation between ignorance and incarceration. Most of the people in prison do not have college degrees. Many don't even have high school degrees. Prison should be a place where a convict can learn a legal trade he can use on the outside.
Honest observers have noted how often religious faith changes the lives of men who were addicted to drugs or otherwise unreachable. Prisons should become schools and churches.
If progressives ever got serious about changing the inequities of our system, they would begin with people who have less than the least. They would begin with prison reform. Prisoners are the real bottom of the pile since even a homeless man has the freedom to choose his possessions and go where he will. Convicts don't.
