Too Shy to Date
December 19th 2010 23:56
You tell you friends that you haven’t pulled the trigger on the internet dating thing because you have heard all the scary stories about stalkers and homicidal maniacs. But in reality you know that the Craig’s List killer for instance hung out on Craig’s List and you don’t.
You are actually more concerned about your reception. Will they like you? Will you say or do the right thing?
Start slow. Try the internet at your own pace. First find things that you like and people whose opinions that you like or respect or admire or just find interesting. Just be a lurker in the background at first. At this stage participation is not necessary. It’s perfectly safe since most internet sites will never even know it was you there looking at their photos and reading their articles.
In my opinion, Craig List gives a lesson in what not to do and where not to go. Not only are they a bit too wild and woolly for the tastes of some, but if you go on their forums you can see that they can be dominated by people with the minds of barely literate 7th graders. People who think spray painting curse words anonymously on a wall is cool and daring. Since you and I both agree that such behavior is at best stupid, let’s agree to leave that bad experience to the soon to be convicted felons who enjoy it.
Stay on moderated sites where the cursing is kept to a minimum.
One of the things I highly recommend is finding a blog on your favorite subject or hobby. You are likely to find nice, like minded folks there. Also you should try photo and travel blogs. There is almost always something interesting on photo or travel blogs.
Mind you, this is not where you are going to find someone to go to the movies with–yet. That comes later. First be interesting by giving voice to your passions. Find something that interests you.
